Aboitiz power deal gets ERC nod

THE Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved the electric power supply agreement between Hydroelectric Development Corp. (Hedcor) and Davao Light and Power Co. Inc., both of the Aboitiz group.

In a Feb. 13 decision, the ERC acknowledged how Hedcor edged out two other private power producers -- Aggreko International Projects Ltd. and Marubeni Energy Services Corp. -- to win the supply deal.

It also recognized the need of Davao Light to contract the services of a private power producer for its supply requirements.

In its application, Davao Light said that while power demand was increasing in its franchise area, it was also experiencing low-voltage power supply because of insufficient power sources in southern Mindanao, inadequate transmission capacity in northern Mindanao and an impending supply shortfall by 2008.

Davao Light said it "entered a new power supply agreement with Hedcor as its supplier in order to meet this increasing demand and the future power requirements of its customers."
