ERC closes ranks behind Alcordo
Monday, June 12, 2006
Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) recently closed ranks behind one of its members amid the brewing controversy on the privatization of the National Power Corporation’s 800-megawatt Masinloc power plant in Zambales.
In a resolution, the ERC stood behind Commissioner Jesus Alcordo and debunked insinuations that he has any links to YNN Holdings which has initially won the bid for the Masinloc power plant.
The ERC expressed its "displeasure over the apparent attempts at smearing the honor and reputation of its (ERC) members, particularly that of Commissioner Alcordo." The Commission reiterates its faith in the integrity of Commissioner Alcordo and in the transparency with which he has discharged his functions as a member of the Commission, the ERC said.
ERC chair Rodolfo Albano earlier said the ERC has "nothing to do with the sale of Masinloc." The transaction, he said, is under the supervision of the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Corporation or PSALM. Albano expressed surprise and disgust over the apparent attempts to drag the ERC into the Masinloc controversy.
The ERC also noted that Alcordo "has consistently inhibited himself from hearing, deliberations and decisions affecting corporations and interests with he may have been identified with in the past." They added that Alcordo has divested himself of any interest in a private corporation as early as the year 2002.
The ERC also appealed to the "parties behind the apparent smear drive to cease from the undue and unfair allusion to the ERC and its members" in the light of the Masinloc controversy. The smear drive, they added, would not help the persons or parties behind it to prosper in whatever motives they have regarding the privatization of Masinloc.
We urge a return to decency and sobriety in the handling of issues in media, particularly those affecting the policies, programs and persons involved in the power sector, the ERC said.
