Energy regulatory body stops Meralco from charging automatic increases in rates
Tuesday, September 05, 2006

MANILA (XFN-ASIA)

- The Energy Regulatory Commission has ordered Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) to stop making customers pay increases in its generation charge made under an automatic mechanism.

The ERC issued the order after the Supreme Court ruled last month that the ERC was wrong when, in 2004, it allowed Meralco to collect from its customers an increase of P0.1327 per kiloWatt-hour under an automatic mechanism.

The Supreme Court has ordered Meralco to refund its customers.

The ERC said it was following the Supreme Court's ruling that adjustments in rates due to changes in the cost of fuel or buying electricity should not be automatic, but made only after applying to the ERC.

The regulator directed Meralco to submit a refund scheme within 10 days of its receipt of the ERC's order.
